Jordan Henderson is The Right Guy for Liverpool's Armband

The speculation on the new vice-captain post vacancy since Daniel Agger left Liverpool has ended when Brendan Rodgers announced that Jordan Henderson is his final choice. Before Henderson's appointment, The Writer was aware that several names such as Martin Skrtel, Lucas, Daniel Sturridge, new boy Dejan Lovren, and Glen Johnson were the individuals that Brendan had as his bunch of choices. But 'Hendo' is the most suitable person as far as The Writer is concerned. Hendo's career at Liverpool is not a typical success story. He suffered a lot of abuse and criticism in his first season (2011) when the then Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish bought him from Sunderland. It was coincidence with Liverpool's poor form under Dalglish. Although, Liverpool did win a League Cup under Dalglish, the fans expected more from this 20 million signing as the fee represented a very huge investment. Most of the fans thought Hendo was an overrated British player in the over-inflated British market. There was nothing Hendo could do during that time than kept his head down and work hard. The Writer also joined the fans' opinions in feeling Hendo was a mistake and Liverpool should get rid of him sooner rather than later. The Hendo that The Writer knew at Sunderland was an exciting young talent who loved to burst into speed at the right flank and able to provide beautiful crosses for the strikers to score. The sight of that occasion was rarely seen at Anfield.

Then in 2012/2013 season, came Brendan Rodgers replacing Dalglish as the new Liverpool manager. It marked a new starting point for Hendo although he was very near in following Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam went out to other clubs as part of Rodgers' new revolution and removing the dead wood at Liverpool. A transfer to Fulham never materialized and it seemed a destiny for Hendo to finally succeed at Liverpool and not joining Fulham into the relegation at the end of that season. Later, Hendo was surprisingly very much part of Rodgers' tactical system at Liverpool. His tireless performance and huge passion in improving his overall game made him a definite starter in Rodger's hard pressing and fast attacking tactic. He even provided a number of assists and goals which completed the turnaround of his career at Liverpool. The fans realized that Hendo was a rejuvenated player and all the abuses that came previously, never been heard at Liverpool anymore. Hendo currently is the now and the future of Liverpool and England. His decision to take Steven Gerrard's England number 4 jersey indicates that he is ready to be the main man in midfield following Gerrard's international retirement. His new vice-captain role at Liverpool will also see him take the captain's armband at Liverpool permanently if Gerrard finally decided to retire from football for good. A captain role was never new to Henderson as he was the former captain of England under 21 squad. The Writer believed Hendo is the most suitable person to be the successor of Gerrard's legacy at Anfield. He is honest and a hardworker who sees failure as the stepping stone to achieve more unimaginable things in life. Who would have thought he could be what he is now two years ago prior to Brendan Rodgers' arrival? Supposedly no one. And Hendo can now concentrate in improving Liverpool's second placed achievement last season as all he will have now at Anfield are just praises and songs to spur him and teammates to a greater height. No more abuses and criticism. Anfield have found their new favorite son after Steven Gerrard and they know that, the man Hendo will not leave them when he is succesful. Not like the Torreses, the Suarezes, and the Owens. Hendo is here to stay and payback Liverpool 20 million's investment once upon a time. #YNWA!

Rebuilding Old Trafford

Below are another extract conversations between The Writer and his close pal, Mr. A regarding his beloved Manchester United. There is no more suitable person to give the hindsight of United’s current progress than this true hardcore United fan who adores legends such as Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra...

The Writer:
So, first win of the season against QPR. How do you feel before the match and after it? I’m sure all you United fans were excited to see new United signings especially Radamel Falcao to play. I’m excited too, honestly. Although United didn’t really need him as they already have two world class strikers in Robin and Wayne, his presence will certainly lift the mood and confidence of the rest of United’s players.

Mr. A:
Like all ManUtd fans, I was excited and very eager to watch that game. We knew that game would set the tempo for the rest of the season. Boy we nailed it. The feel good factor was there again at Old Trafford. It is the feeling we were missing for the past few months. From the back, Tyler Blackett and Jonny Evans were impressive. They did not have a lot to do during the game but they look comfortable at each other’s company. De Gea was mostly a spectator during the game. The return of Rafael at right back was superb. Marcos Rojo looks decent at leftback for a debutant. The midfielders were solid with Juan Mata and Ander Herrera running the game while Daley Blind tidy up and set the tempo from the back. Angel Di Maria, as usual was pure fantastic. If he continues this form, he will definitely worth every penny United paid for him. I think United fans are already in love with him. Wayne Rooney showed his class with a goal while RVP still looks rusty. The arrival of Radamel Falcao into the team should worry RVP. Thus I predict, RVP will be back at his best to retain his position as the main goalscorer for United. Falcao did make a cameo. He is still adapting to the game and we will need time to see what he can do.

But personally, I was so impressed with Blind. It is rarely difficult to find players who can straight away adapt and play in a new team. But Blind played like he was a United player for years. He was very solid. Neutrals might say United won because they played QPR, a newly promoted team. However, after spending millions in the transfer window, QPR was also committed to kick off their season at old Trafford. Nonetheless, from that game, QPR was poor. Simply as that. It was a good opportunity for United to lift their confidence and spirits. I am sure they will carry on this form into the coming games. I think judging from United’s performance, LVG might stick to this 4-4-2 diamond formation in the coming games.  I am looking forward to see United’s next game and hope they can replicate the same form.

The Writer:
Yes I agree with you on Blind, Di Maria, Robin and the 4-4-2 diamond formation. Blind gave a smooth and composed display in the stopper position. But we are yet to see Blind holding the midfield against a more aggressive team. I wonder if Joey Barton had play in that match, what type of play will Blind give? He is certainly not a hard tackler or an anchorman but more to a Xabi Alonso type of defensive midfielder with a less long range of passing. If Blind survives the test against more aggressive teams like Mancity (Fernando/Fernandinho), Liverpool (Steven Gerrard), and even Sunderland (Lee Catermole), he can the best in that position for United. Di Maria on the other hand gave a wonderful all round game. I’ve never saw him taking a proper free-kick before this honestly. But boy what an excellent kick which confused the wall and the goalkeeper. I’ve also rarely saw him playing on the left but more central. The Di Maria that I knew is a pacy and tireless wideman who is always interested in crossing the ball, penetrating, and dribbling from the left. But his display in this narrower diamond formation saw his creativity was used to the fullest. He looked a real deal in that iconic no 7 jersey. Then about Robin, he really looked a tired player. Maybe it was from his low fitness level and his recent injury problem. But he also looked a player ready to retire. There is less passion seen in his play nowadays. There is no spark and no urgency, maybe he gave too much effort and emotion in the last World Cup. Lastly about the new formation. I’m also pleased to see United changed their formation. A 3-5-2 formation against a team who also used the 3-5-2 formation will be a disaster. QPR also used 3 at the back in Ferdinand, Caulker, and Hill. But United’ central defense is a big problem and four at the back brought more stability. However this formation left United’s favorite son, Darren Fletcher on the bench, and I fear for his career moving forward. More so if United manage to get Arturo Vidal from Juventus this January transfer window.

Rio Ferdinand said in his new autobiography that David Moyes last season set United to play in a tactic not to lose against opponents. And certainly not to win. But in the Ferguson era, United was set to go and attack the opponents to win games. This is what LVG is trying to reinstall back in the mind of the United players.

Mr. A:
Don’t forget about Michael Carrick. He is somehow a forgotten man. He is not a flashy type of a player but his presence in midfield, do make a difference. Let’s talk about the unsung heroes in the middle of the park. For ManUtd, it got to be Michael and Darren. Michael provide the physical strength and passing range where he dictates play and sit just above the back four. He is not a ball winner, but he intercepts and controls the tempo. On the other hand, Darren is more to a box to box type of player. He runs to cover the hole left when United is attacking. This current ManUtd squad has introduced Blind and Herrera in a new midfield partnership. Both of these new boys are in line to control United’s middle of the park for years to come. Blind, as you mentioned, has the composed nature in his game with his high completion passing game, only lacking the physicality that Carrick has. On the other hand, Herrera is a tireless midfielder like Darren but he usually drops deep playing as a deep lying playmaker. It has been a while since ManUtd brought in a midfielder in the likes of ‘Nicky Butts’ and ‘Roy Keanes’. These type of players win you the ball in the midfield. They even put their body on the line just to ensure the team retain possession. Over the years, we saw Sir Alex try to find this Butts and Keanes type of replacement. As to this date, I am not convinced we managed to acquire that type. Eric Djemba-Djemba, Liam Miller, and Owen Hargreaves all came in to become the ball winners. But only Hargreaves managed to fill that role as he secured his move from Bayern after impressing at the 2010 World Cup. As a fan, I was so happy when he came. He showed desire and tenacity in midfield. His injuries, however, let him down. I always wonder, what could have happened if he maintain fit all this while. His public outburst by accusing United’s medical staff of not looking after him while he was injured, did hurt me too. That sort of accusation somehow shows that he was not a true United and the worst part was when he decided to leave for our rival, ManCity. As a consequence, United fans remembered him as a sulky player, thanks to his own action.

Other players that I like to watch are Nemanja Matic (Chelsea) and Lucas Leiva (Liverpool). The former has revolutionize himself and has became a regular in Jose Mourinho’s side, winning the position over John Obi Mikel. Like I mentioned just now, he is like Carrick who is not flashy but he keeps the game simple. Same goes to the latter, Lucas does play a simple game. I am not sure why Liverpool fan does not appreciate him. I do regard him highly. The only concern is maybe his physicality where he is quite soft in that aspect. Lee Cattermole is a hard tackling midfield who I see as in the same mould like Roy Keane. He is aggressive and passionate. I also think he is a bit under rated and I hope he will don the Three Lions shirt in the future.

The Writer:
Michael and Darren are the identity of United. They are appreciated by the fans but with Europe and the League Cup no longer a commitment for United, I truly fear for their involvement for United this season. I read in one news that had Patrick Kluivert saying LVG will use the 3-5-2 formation in his tenure at Old Trafford for foreseeable future. The match against QPR was a one-off. If LVG got the centre backs all fit and manage to buy another world-class type, he will certainly revert back to 3-5-2 in the future. This formation is good for the likes of Michael and Darren to get game times, but I still not convinced by its effectiveness in the EPL. You did mentioned that United has to find the Butts and Keanes type. But Arturo Vidal is not that type of player, he is a box to box type. United looks to be content with Blind in that position in the years to come.

Owen Hargreaves is very unfortunate with his time at United. He was a good player groomed by the famous Bayern Munich academy. But his injury really let him, his coach and the fans down. He was regarded to be the missing puzzle for United and England prior to his transfer to England, but instead he had been the forgotten liability for both sides. I didn’t really know about the United’s affection on him but if what you’re saying just now is true, it is just sad. United and Alex Ferguson must rued their mistake in signing him in the first place.

On your assessment on Matic and Lucas, I agree totally. They keep the game simple and really protect their back four. Matic shows that failure is not the end of the world and if you have talent, form is just a temporary thing. He blossomed in his return to Chelsea and is currently very much the first names on the team sheet. Lucas meanwhile has had a 50-50 kind of career at Liverpool. He is sometimes decent and sometimes poor. But he has improved and the inclusion into the Brazil team before the World Cup Brazil started where he got injured is a testament to that. Brazilian who was called into the international squad and was granted to wear the no 5 jersey of Dunga is something. And Lucas is that something. Liverpool fans just want more from him, I supposed and sadly they will not get that. Lucas is just Lucas, and Steven Gerrard has taken his place nowadays. He can’t play in a more advanced midfield position either as I think Joe Allen is better than him in that position. Joe Allen has improved and he has followed Jordan Henderson in that sense.

Mr. A:
ManUtd’s next game will be against another newly promoted team, Leicester City. No disrespect to Leicester, this game will be a good opportunity for United to carry their sublime form from the match against QPR. For the past few months, I noticed United was not playing with full confidence and conviction since the Godfather, Sir Alex step down from the managerial post. It was more obvious during Moyes’ tenure as the manager. From these two scenarios, we can conclude that passion and confidence can make huge difference. During Moyes’ tenure, I really could not see the desire within the team. The players seems lost and it was a devastating time for players and fans alike. They were winning one game and will drew the next game and might lost another two games. Inconsistency was the result from low confidence among the players. This has definitely left a big impact on and off the pitch which we saw Moyes’ sacking before the end of the season. I sympathize with Moyes. After all he did try to sort things out, but a club like Man united cannot afford to see all bad records to be broken in such a short period of time. Old Trafford has lost its fear factor. Full stop.

Judging from the last game, the hype was there again. The fans were cheering, the players was performing and the manager, well must have been quite happy how things went out. Even though LVG doesn’t show a lot of emotion, he was surely impressed with that sort of performance. Fans will be expecting the same outcome for next game. If United can continue their form for the next 3-4 games, I can sense that we are back. It is still early days, but the time will surely come. We are United through and through!

The Writer:
Don’t be too over confident against Leicester. You should know man. They are actually the team to watch this season, even my earlier prediction on them getting relegated from EPL this season, looks absurd now. They play better football than Burnley and QPR certainly. Please keep your eye on Leonardo Ulloa and Riyad Mahrez. They are the livewire of this Leicester team. But I still think United will win against Leicester, like all the neutrals and United fans. United have too much firepower and world-class individuals in their team currently. Not to mention their confidence at this point of time. All this will see United go through the match against Leicester with the much-needed 3 points. The key point for United is just play their own football, be it the 3-5-2 formation or the new 4-4-2 diamond formation. LVG should know that. They just need to attack Leicester with the same way they did to QPR. And Falcao may get the nod above RVP in that match, proven that Falcao is fit enough this Friday. So expect Falcao to get his first EPL goal before too long. Anyway, good luck to you and United for the rest of the season ahead. They will surely still be ups and downs along the way, but United’s successful era will certainly be rebuilt by LVG. He is the real ‘Chosen One’…

Wednesday’s Special: Meet Jay-Jay Okocha

In this seventh episode of Wednesday’s Special, The Writer will bring readers into the life and brief story of a weekly selected footballer. Today, readers will have the chance to meet one of the greatest talents from Africa, Jay-Jay Okocha; albeit in words only.

Okocha’s real name is Augustine Azuka Okocha. Sounds a bit like a Japanese name right? He actually got his famous ‘Jay-Jay’ name from his older brother whose named is James. James started a football career first and was simply called as ‘J-J’ among his teammates in Nigeria. Then this younger brother, Augustine, borrowed his brother’s nickname and it stuck until today as ‘Jay-Jay Okocha’. Okocha is widely regarded as the best Nigerian player of his generation and is certainly among the best African players of all time. He was known for his step-over skills, excellent free-kicks, fantastic dribbling ability, and midfield playmaker role. For the record, Okocha holds a second nationality which is Turkish having acquired it while playing in Turkey. His Turkish name is Muhammet Yavuz.

Okocha’s career started in Nigeria where he joined Enugu Rangers in 1990. Within the same year, he was invited to go to German by a friend and luckily he impressed in several training session. Soon after that, he was offered a contract to play for a Third Division German club, Borussia Neunkirchen. Later in 1992, Okocha got a transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt where he plied his trade with several African big name players such as Tony Yeboah and Thomas Doll. One of the highlight during his stay at Frankfurt was a goal he scored past Oliver Kahn. The goal was voted as the Best Goal of The Year 1993. Unfortunately his stay at Frankfurt didn’t last long as he was involved in a feud with manager, Jupp Heynckes and later left the club following the club’s relegation to the 2nd division in 1996.

Okocha signed for Fenerbahce in July 1996 and managed to spend two fruitful years at the club. He scored 30 goals in 62 appearances which were mostly through his trademark free-kicks. In his time at Fenerbahce, he gained the Turkish citizenship and was worshipped by the fanatic fans of Fenerbahce. After two years, Okocha was bought by Paris Saint Germain for 24 million thus making him as the most expensive African footballer at that time. He stayed for another four wonderful years at PSG and was regarded as the mentor for the upcoming young Brazilian superstar in the name of Ronaldinho.

Then after the World Cup 2002, Okocha decided to leave PSG for free after his contract expired and later joined Bolton Wanderers of the EPL. During his time at Bolton, he once again scored a wonder goal which was voted as the Best Goal for Bolton in the new rebranded EPL era. He was made the fans’ favorite as early as in his debut season because of his excellent performance for Bolton and he was made the captain of the club in his second season. As captain, Okocha guided Bolton to the 2004 League Cup Final where they finished a respectable runner-up placement. He was regarded as a legend at Bolton and even had the fans singing a song specially made for him. Among the lyrics in the song are “Jay-Jay – so good they named him TWICE…laa laa laaalaa laa laa”. In all, his stint at Bolton was among his finest and the EPL never forgot his presence there to this day.

In 2006, Okocha left Bolton and joined Qatar SC. His career at Qatar was not successful and in just one season, he left to England again. Hull City was Okocha’s next destination in 2007 as he once said “God has told me to join Hull City”. However his stay at Hull was once again not a successful one and soon after Hull’s victory towards gaining promotion to the EPL, Okocha decided to retire from football for good. Going into his international career, it is fair to say that Okocha really excelled on the international stage as he got the chance to win more trophies and awards than at club level. He won the 1994 African Cup of Nations, 1995 Afro-Asian Cup of Nations, 1996 Olympic gold medalist for men’s football, and several Player of The Tournament & Golden Boot Winner awards. Okocha was also appointed as the Nigeria’s national team captain in 2002. He retired from international duty in 2006 after persistent injuries affected his performances.

Jay-Jay Okocha had never been voted as the African Player of the Year although he was highly regarded as one of the best players of his generation. It was mainly because of his sometimes over-the-limit bad behavior off the pitch and also his closest challengers for the award at that time often got one step above him for the calendar year. However, Okocha was included among Pele’s 125 greatest ever football legends that were still alive in 2004. That was what sums up Jay-Jay Okocha’s 18 years of footballing career. A legend!

Analysis EPL 14/15: Week 4

The EPL entered its fourth stage and The Writer offers his brief analysis on all those 10 matches played. Aston Villa had a shock win to upset the odds for this week 4 predictions...

Arsenal vs Manchester City
Arsenal gave a very brave performance in the game against City which was rarely seen in the seasons before this. It looks like Arsenal really benefited from the top class additions into their squad during this transfer window. Danny Welbeck nearly scored through a chip but well, Danny is still very much the Danny of United, still unreliable to score goals. Jack Wilshere was the best player for Arsenal as he showed that he still has the guts and technique to attack. Wilshere’s right footed goal was exquisite and he proved a lot of pundits wrong by that performance. But Arsenal needs to start winning. ManCity was nearly losing the match but recovered to get a draw. They really penetrated both left and right sides of the field which was being left exposed by the over attack minded Arsenal fullbacks.

Chelsea vs Swansea City
Chelsea continued their excellent form of the season with a big win against Swansea. An own goal from John Terry early in the game was not in the script and they must feel confused, but Chelsea showed their title credential to win by 4-2. Diego Costa opened his hatrick account in EPL and Cesc Fabregas was once again his feeder. All is good currently for Chelsea except for their defending. They leaked too much goals recently. Swansea still showed their class in this match by having a go at Chelsea’s defence. The pass from Wilfried Bony to assist Jonjo Shelvey’s goal was top class.

Crystal Palace vs Burnley
The Writer really fears for Burnley. It’s already the fourth week and Burnley still didn’t show a performance worth a place to stay in the EPL. Their attack was blunt as ever and they have no particular players who can be a match winner in their own right. They really need a top class addition into their squad. This is the third consecutive time in which they didn’t manage to score a single goal. This match against Crystal Palace actually should give them the first win to kickstart their season, instead they drew blank yet again. Wilfried Zaha started for the first time in an EPL match as he never got the chance at ManUtd. However Zaha failed to score another goal like last weekend as Palace drew against Burnley. Palace was really fortunate that Burnley’s late penalty didn’t go in. But Neil Warnock will have a good season with Palace as he already setup a nice English core there.

Southampton vs Newcastle United
The Writer has said before this that Newcastle must win this game to please their owner and the fans. But they failed yet again. And they failed miserably. Southampton trashed Newcastle to prove they are still a power to be reckoned with. Graziano Pelle has started to show his predatory instinct. Dusan Tadic as usual was at his creative best. A perfect and even better replacement for the departed Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana partnership. Ronald Koeman and his brother Erwin Koeman have done a good job so far.

Stoke City vs Leicester City
Finally, Leicester got the win that they really deserved. Three games before this, they were the dominant team but yet still ended up losing. In this game, Stoke was more dominant but a single goal from Leonardo Ulloa was enough to give Leicester their first three points. Having said that, it is still better for them to be dominant after this and ended up as winner again. Stoke was unlucky and they must have thought that their luck was left behind at the Etihad stadium where they won there last week.

Sunderland vs Tottenham Hotspur
A game of tactical battle between major power from American Latin and the 2-2 draw proved that they were equal on that day. Emmanuel Adebayor gave an excellent performance in attack but his reluctance to join Spurs goal celebrations was one of the mysteries of this game. In all Spurs still in a recovering process from the loss to Liverpool which affect their game flow before this. And Sunderland’s defence looked shaky at times by mistakes from John Oshea and Wes Brown.

West Brom vs Everton
Everton had Romelu Lukaku back in the scoresheet and all was well for them. John Stones fit nicely in the centre back role although he often got left for dead by Saido Berahino in the match against West Brom. Berahino got two shots onto the Everton’s goal but this was meant to be a bad day at the office for West Brom. As long as almost everyone is fit and healthy like currently, Everton can win games. But West Brom needs more than health issue; they need new players to shine fast and a more proven manager to take in charge.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa
Aston Villa had a very brilliant match at Anfield as they were holding onto their 1-0 lead until the final whistle. Their defending was top class and Philip Senderos is a revitalised player. He won almost all aerial battles in defence and won many headers towards the Liverpool’s goal. Nathan Baker, his centre back partner was also immense in the match. Liverpool had no enough idea to break Villa’s defensive line and the win propelled Villa into the second place in the table. Not everyone was expecting that. Liverpool meanwhile showed a convincing link-up play from their attacking players. But they really need goal-getter Daniel Sturridge to convert chances into goals.

Manchester United vs QPR
The game of Week 4. United gave a brilliant and improved performance which awarded them with the first 3 points of the season. Angel Di Maria was the star of the show with his creativity and the free-kick he scored. He blossomed in the new 4-4-2 formation alongside Juan Mata and Daley Blind who was as cool as cucumber at the stopper position. Even Falcao had a decent debut and received a hero’s welcome by the fans. QPR was at the wrong at the wrong time. If they faced another team at this week 4, they might continue their winning way like in the Week 3. Rio Ferdiand must be wondering his luck.

Hull City vs West Ham
The latest game to be played and it was filled with two goals from newcomers. Abel Hernandez of Hull scored first, early in the game. Only to be denied of its front page popularity by a stunning rocket goal by Enner Valencia of West Ham. Honestly Valencia’s goal was a very difficult goal to execute and luck might have played its part in that build up to that goal. In all, both teams deserved the draw.
