Wednesday’s Special: Meet Park Ji Sung

In this fifth episode of Wednesday’s Special, The Writer will bring readers into the life and brief story of a weekly selected footballer. Today, readers will have the chance to meet one of the famous footballers from Asia, Park Ji Sung; albeit in words only.

Park Ji Sung was a former South Korean superstar and a former captain of his national team too. He shot into stardom when he joined Manchester United in July 2005. Prior to that, Park started his career at South Korea where he played for the Myongji University team before moving to Japan to play for Kyoto Purple Sanga. After that, Guus Hiddink, the national team manager of South Korea in the year of 2003, decided to step down and manage PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch league instead. Liking Park so much, Hiddink recruited him into his PSV team. And there was where Park's career began to blossom in Europe. Following the departure of Arjen Robben from PSV to Chelsea, Park was afforded more starting opportunities and he quickly proved his worth to the team. PSV fans were so obsessed with Park that they wrote a song about him entitled 'Song for Park', which was included in the official PSV album entitled 'PSV Kampioen'.

After an impressive showings for PSV in just two seasons there, Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United decided to sign Park. All of sudden, Park's popularity rose even higher and Park was once referred to as the 'David Beckham of Asia'. Park's time at Manchester was a successful one as he managed to win four EPL titles, one Champions League title, and other numerous competitions. He was known at United for his tireless work rate and energy. Sir Alex referred Park as 'a player with three lungs' and 'a player with a golden heart'. Sir Alex loved to use Park in the games against big teams and important competitions because of his industrious display and quality defensive works all over the pitch. During his time at United, Park was the best of friends with Carlos Tevez and Patrice Evra. All three of them were often seen pictured together everywhere at United. In fact, they are so close until today.

Park's career at Manchester United ended in 2012 where he then chose to join Queens Park Rangers (QPR) for more first team opportunities. The move was also part of the QPR owner's public relation plan to promote QPR to Asia as a whole. Park was even being made the new captain of QPR to please the fans. However, injuries and severe dip in form sidelined Park for most of his time at QPR. And to make matter worse, QPR was relegated from the EPL in 2013. Park decided to end his QPR career and then rejoined his former club, PSV Eindhoven. The injuries he suffered at QPR strike him back at PSV and in the end of 2013/2014 season, Park announced his full retirement from football as the result of persistent knee injury.

In all, Asia will feel the big loss of Park Ji Sung's supreme talent. He will always be remembered as part of the South Korean team that finished fourth in the 2002 World Cup and being the first ever Asian to win the Champions League. He proved that small-built Asian footballer can also succeed in the highest level of football with the right work ethics, discipline, and the big will to win. The 'player with three lungs' can now rest peacefully looking back at a wonderful legacy he has left behind...

The Curious Case of Chelsea's Strikers

Is Diego Costa any better than Chelsea’s flopped strikers?

Chelsea is one of the only two teams left to have a maximum of 9 points from the first 3 games. Yes, it was contributed by Diego Costa’s consecutive goals in all those matches. But in truth, Cesc Fabregas was the real reason why Chelsea have managed to win those matches and scoring happily. It doesn’t matter of how many creative midfielders a team has; the strikers need the supply and assist from them to score goals. That was the case happened to Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and many other Chelsea’s flopped forwards. The midfielders didn’t help them enough. By playing with just one striker as always, Chelsea previously don’t have a midfielder that can supply decent balls for the strikers to score. Torres, Ba, and Eto’o often had to wait in the penalty box for any loose ball rebounded from the opposition goalkeeper to score. It was really rare to see Torres, Ba, and Eto’o last season in a one-and-one situation to score. Frank Lampard was a box-to box type of midfielder, where he will also be in the penalty box to score. No chance of supply from him there. Oscar loved to shoot from distance and even dribbled past defenders before finally shooting the ball to the opposition goalkeeper. No chance of supply from him there. Ramires loved to run with the ball too. Again, no chance of supply from him there! Eden Hazard loved to dribble with speed from the left flank before shooting or else, he will drag the ball back and pass it to the Chelsea’s left back if spaces were tight. Another zero chance of supply from him there. Then Willian was another one who rarely supplies the ball to the strikers. Chelsea’s flopped strikers were not the only one to blame for the team’s lack of goals from the top position.

With Fabregas, Chelsea now has a midfielder of world-class ability in passing the ball into the danger area. If looked into most of Chelsea’s goals this season, Fabregas was the regular supplier of the through ball that lead to the goals scored. He showed his tremendous ability in spotting the best possible position for Diego Costa and Andre Schurrle to score. And incredibly, Fabregas did that in just a split second. The perfect timing is the real difference where Chelsea often exploited the defensive weakness of their oppositions. Jose Mourinho is a genius. If he just brought Diego Costa, he will get the same problem he has faced before with those of Torres, Ba, and Eto’o. He always knew that Cesc Fabregas is not a Frank Lampard’s replacement. Fabregas is more than that. Fabregas will not score a lot of goals that Lampard had, but he will register more assists than what Lampard had. And more importantly, Fabregas can make Chelsea’s strikers more lethal than ever in front of goal. Fabregas’ best position is at the heart of midfield, not as a ‘false no 9’ at Barcelona and Spain. At Chelsea, he was the Arsenal’s Fabregas of old. He likes to receive the ball and dictate play from the center, because he is a player with an eagle’s eye. If all Torres, Ba, and Eto’o had decided to stay this season with Chelsea, they will surely benefit from Fabregas’ presence. Just like Diego Costa did…

Analysis EPL 14/15: Week 3

The EPL entered its third phase and The Writer offers his brief analysis on all those 10 matches played. The biggest shock came from the Etihad where ManCity was beaten at their home…

Burnley vs Manchester United
Boring boring boring Manchester United. Not Arsenal anymore. The Red Devils can’t score in this match, even with all their star players of Rooney, Van Persie, Mata, and Di Maria playing from the start. The 3-5-2 system still haven’t work. It may be a bless for United to have this international break of 2 weeks to tweak their current system a little bit. Burnley was also the factor contributed to the draw. Their attacks for these last 3 opening games were very poor. Although they managed to have a try or two at United’s goal, it was still not up to the EPL’s standard. On another day, United might have won this game. Burnley need to improve their attack and maybe using corners as source of goals.

Manchester City vs Stoke City
Well well well. This was a surprise indeed. A full throttle City who defeated Liverpool on Monday earlier, was so unlucky in their attempts on Stoke’s goal. Yaya Toure’s efforts may have resulted in ManCity’s win if all of his three chances being converted into goals. City was not poor but just pure unlucky. However, Stoke was immense in their play. They took their only clear chances to a very good effect. Mame Diouf saved their day. In all, this was just a blip for City and there won’t have to be any panic button to press.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace
One of the blockbuster games of Week 3. Not because of the clubs that were involved in it. But because of the scoreline and the high level of intensity shown by both teams. Newcastle’s wonderkid, Rolando Aarons were the star of the match. He showed a confident performance by scoring one and assisting one. He looked to be another Raheem Sterling, young and small but very confident in playing. In truth both teams must be very disappointed in getting out this match by just one point. They both showed a real attacking display and the resurgent Wilfried Zaha is finally back where he really belongs.

QPR vs Sunderland
Finally, QPR ditched their previous formation of 3-5-2 and used 4-4-1-1. And this resulted in the first win for QPR this season. Charlie Austin managed to get out of the departed Loic Remy’s shadow and scored the solitary goal of the match. Things may improved more for QPR and owner Tony Fernandes looked happier than ever. Sunderland gave a good fight but they need to replace Steven Fletcher in the starting line up because he looked really low in confidence at this moment.

Swansea City vs West Brom
Swansea continued their impressive form by being the only other team to get full 9 points other than Chelsea. Once again, Nathan Dyer popped in the early goal like last weekend. His form dropped last season but for the two seasons before that, he was like he was currently. Full of running and having a sharp eye for goals. If he continues like this, Roy Hodgson may finally go to the Liberty Stadium to watch him play and may select him for England. West Brom maybe the latest team to suffer in the hand of Swansea, but their overall play was no good. Debutant, Brown Ideye was uninspiring in leading the attack. And they suffered when their defense had an off-game too.

West Ham vs Southampton
Mark Noble proved that his England snub was wrong by scoring the first goal of the game. But that was it for West Ham. In the end, they got another boo sound from their own fans after surrendering that lead and then losing by 1-3 margins. Southampton started the game late but managed to stamp their mark. Ronald Koeman got his first win and Graziano Pelle got his first goal in English game. Generally, it was a happy day for the Saints.

Everton vs Chelsea
Second blockbuster game of Week 3. Like Mourinho said, both teams didn’t have a good defense on that Saturday night. That was the game for attackers, as nine goals were exchanged between both teams. Diego Costa showed why he was the hitman that Chelsea really needed and Steven Naismith scored for the third game running, The only bad thing about this game was Diego Costa’s behavior towards the Everton players. He should never provoke Everton and showed disrespect to them. People may have a bad perceptive about him after this.

Aston Villa vs Hull City
Hull City suffered a double disappointment in one week. Their elimination from the Europa League was a case of so near yet so far. Then came Villa to put another salt in the already painful wound. The usual suspects of  Gabby Agbonlahor and Andi Weimann put any Hull's hope of a revival win to bed. They scored with a solitary goal from Nikica Jelavic as the only consolation from Hull. The world looks bright in Villa Park under Paul Lambert and Roy Keane.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool
Liverpool showed that they are still better than Spurs and Spurs was fortunate to just concede only 3 goals. Raheem Sterling, Mario Balotelli, and Daniel Sturridge had a very outstanding game and Dejan Lovren showed class in stopping Emmanuel Adebayor until the final whistle. Spurs had no answer to Liverpool efficient play and they must improve their performance against bigger teams after this if they want to achieve a top 4 finish. If not, Spurs is just another outsider to the Champions League this season.

Leicester City vs Arsenal
Arsenal gave a subdued performance at the King Power Stadium. Mainly because of injuries to the first team players and the game they played against Besiktas on Wednesday earlier. Yaya Sanogo was chosen to lead the attack and he was only good for the Sanchez's goal that he assisted. Arsenal needs better target man. Leicester on the other hand gave the same spirited performance. The combination of Leo Ulloa, Riyad Mahrez, David Nugent, and Jeffrey Schlupp was much better than before and they may ended up as winner soon if they continue like that. Ulloa got 2 goals now from 3 games, not a bad return for the Leicester's record signing.

Malaysian Double Trouble: Aidil Zafuan & Zaquan Adha

Malaysians are not just blessed with their attractive Twin Towers of Petronas KLCC, they also have an eye catching twin in their football scenery. Most Malaysians must be familiar with the sight of twin brothers from Negeri Sembilan playing in the Malaysian Super League and also representing Malaysia on the international stage. They are, (if readers still don’t have any idea), Mohd Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak and Mohd Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak. This year both are reaching 27 years of age and it seems like they have been in Malaysian football forever as they started getting Malaysian’s attention very early. It has been 12 to 14 years already since both burst into the Malaysian football, the similar duration football fans have known about Wayne Rooney’s existence when he made big move signing to Manchester United. Aidil and Zaquan started their professional career for their beloved Negeri Sembilan in 2004 when they helped them to win the gold medal in SUKMA 2004 men’s football. After that triumph, both were quickly promoted into the Negeri Sembilan’s senior squad. And in 2005/2006 season, they helped Negeri Sembilan to win their first Malaysian Super League. At this time, most Malaysian fans already knew and aware of their wonderful ability and also their good looking appearances.

Aidil and Zaquan joined Malaysian U-20 national team in 2004/2005 season and then subsequently were called into the Malaysian senior national team in 2007/2008 season. Both were already the familiar faces in youth international competitions as they started since they were 14 years old. They have helped Malaysian team to win some memorable competitions namely the Merdeka Tournament, Southeast Asia Games, and others. Off the pitch, the twin has also offered their services in becoming the model for new national jersey presentation and other sponsorship activities. In all, they are the face of Malaysian football in this modern era and the place where the Malaysian new generations of football fans put their hopes on.

Although they are twin, Aidil and Zaquan are of different positions and abilities. Aidil plays as a defender, while Zaquan is a striker. Aidil is not known for his tough tackling but he is quick in intercepting the through ball attributed by his pace and good coordination. Aidil is also known in the Malaysian Super League as a killer crosser and outstanding free-kicks taker having assisting from the flanks and scoring long and middle distance free-kicks. Zaquan on the other hand is good in scoring as he scored 62 goals in 126 appearances for Negeri Sembilan. But persistent knee injuries prevent him from improving his career goals as he frequently being sidelined for a long period.

Aidil and Zaquan always played together in the same clubs since they started. Rumors said that when clubs were interested in signing one of the twin brothers, they have to take them both as a package. It’s like a double swoop and also a coup for any clubs, considering their big reputations in Malaysia and also their decent football abilities. When their contracts at Negeri Sembilan were running down in 2008, many clubs were vying to sign them. Even a top club from Slovakia was rumored to be interested in the twin. But they showed their loyalty and then continued playing for Negeri Sembilan until 2012. Then after that, an upcoming club named Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) approached the twin to join them. ATM was very ambitious as they were looking to get a straight promotion into the Malaysian Super League from the lower league, Malaysian Premier League. Their ambition to sign Aidil and Zaquan was a big statement of intent. In the end both signed for ATM. The move was a major success as they helped ATM to win the Premier League in the same year and ATM was automatically promoted to the Super League. At this time, the twin’s stock rise even higher and the big fish of the Super League came calling. Johor Darul Takzim (JDT), a rebranded team of Johor FC, were very interested in signing the twin as part of their own project of creating a ‘Malaysian’s Galacticos’. Upon hearing JDT signing big named players such as Safiq Rahim, Safee Sali, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, and others, Aidil and Zaquan didn’t hesitate to join JDT. In 2013 they finally signed for JDT. Zaquan’s knee injury strucked him again last year and he was then being pushed down to the sister’s club of JDT, which is JDT II as a result of his lack of appearances. Meanwhile, Aidil helped JDT to win their first ever Malaysian league title in this year’s 2014 edition. The superb performances all year from Aidil has forced the new national team coach, Dollah Salleh, to appoint him as the new permanent captain of Malaysia replacing his JDT’s teammate, Safiq Rahim. The new added responsibility made Aidil’s reputation even bigger. It is hoped that his twin, Zaquan, can get fully fit from his injury quickly and join Aidil in creating more history and making the nation proud by winning more international competitions. When they manage to that, it will be no surprised if Malaysian people are proud of two twins in the future. One being the Petronas Twin Towers and the other one being the Malaysian twin footballers…
